An exercise in Depth of Field, dim lighting, and something like 16 layered renders, because my computer can only handle so much DoF without giving me the "Out of Memory" whatsit. Just wanted to try something a little different for once.

With statues. Yes, not that different.

Software: Vue 5 Infinite, Poser 7, Cinema 4D 8.5 and Photoshop CS
Models: Sixus 1, Daz 3D, Danie and Marforno, and Kawecki, among others.
Number of Energy Drinks/Shots taken while composing: 4

Enjoy!

EDIT 7/1/09: Found out one of my composited layers had not been placed at a full 100% opacity (Thaaaaank you, Crinklestein! I appreciate it!), fixed that and reuploaded.

I have to agree. It is one of the best. The facial expressions alone make this one stand out. I, as usual, love the little details, like the spider web on the arm of one of the victims. And the scream of the one on the left is just horrifying!

One thing of detail I noticed while looking at the finer details of everything. The girl and the guy on the right in the back, their feet are transparent. It looks darker on Windows photoviewer than it does in Painter but their feet are ghostly.

But it doesn't matter at all. It's an amazing piece. I love the 3D look to their stone eyeballs too. The shading is really well done there.

Thanks, man! I was really happy with the way it turned out... and yes, I agree, the expression of the victim on the left is one that turned out better than I could have hoped... I was definitely trying for the macabre there, and I think I hit the mark. ^_^

Thaaaaank you very much for pointing out the ghostly feet there. The problem with layering and then adding a second layer to lighten the figures is that setting the above layer on "screen" tends to wash out the stuff below, and I honestly had not noticed it. That should be fixed up now.

But overall, I'm really glad you like this one... so far, I'd say it's definitely one of my faves!

It's been hectic, unfortunately, bud. I hope everything's been really good on your end!

I definitely wanted to pull a little something different with this one. I did actually plan the way the mouth on the one character was distended/distorted, sort of for effect.... kind of giving her scream a sort of "feels like her soul dunked in liquid nitrogen" tinge to it. Evil, I know, but I really liked the result. ^_^

I'm very glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the kind words!

I reeeeeally need to get off my duff and get a pic of Jordan done. I might have to have you send me some character details and an idea for a pose so I can look into it.

I managed somehow to download the full version of this, just so I could give you some feedback :XD:

The least I could say is that the mood is perfectly set. Dark. Fearful. The poses on the characters match well as well as their facial expressions, though I'd say the mouth on the left character has a weird shape, but it is yet the one that shows the most fear of them all. And of course the pose of Medusa matches well, too.

Now, about the “dark” part, maybe it's a bit too dark. The fact 60% of the image is pitch black makes it look like it is empty (mostly on the left part of the picture). Besides, if my guess is right, you wanted to put the focus on Medusa (since the Depth Blur focuses on her), so I think she should have deserved a bit more light – for instance, her snake hair is completely black, while it is one of her main features that should be seen.

About the Depth Blur... Oh god, every time I tried to use that thing, it ended up being a catastrophe. Anyway... I'd say it works pretty well when you look closely at the image. But when you look at it globally, the fact the blur is subtle added to the fact the characters are mostly invisible makes it look like there's actually no blur at all (except on the front character on which it is pretty obvious).

Well, I think I'm done with the commentary. Overall, while the concept is pretty classic in your art, you managed to give it a “fresh” look with these experiments. Good job !
:iconstonespell:
Argo, the pathos on this one are palpable and haunting. Great job, man!
:iconargoforg:
You know me, man! I'm all about Pathos! And Bathos! And whatever the name of the third Musketeer was!

Just kidding. I'm glad you like it, man! It's definitely a dark picture, but oddly enough, I *like* dark pictures, so it worked out well. Glad you liked it, too!
